Argghh! Are you like me and have spent countless hours reading about all these different software platforms? In my case, I have many different forums that I would like to upgrade – currently running PhpBB 2.2x on most of them. I don’t mind sinking some money into them – but I want a really great user experience.

I’ve been running forums since 1999 so have been around the block a bit. I’ve been burned in the past by using bridges and combinations of software that were deprecated – so I’m a little leary of using multiple software platforms, but still open to the idea if it really rocks and is stable.

So here’s my input on it all. Would REALLY appreciate your comments, insight and feedback.

PhpBB 3.x

I waited a long time (almost two years) for the much heralded PhpBB Olympus update. I went through all the upgrade stages for phpbb back from phpbb 2.0 – Lots of security holes and got hacked several times running nearly 100 different forums. So when things stabilized at 2.2x I decided to stay put.

My understanding is it’s stable now, and I’ve been running 2.2x for a couple years without any problems. The modding done by hand for phpbb is a little time consuming – but I enjoy it so didn’t mind spending 100+ hours to get all the mods I wanted.

I like phpbb – it’s easy to use and I enjoy the admin interface. Only problem is there’s not so many mods yet for 3.0 that do what I want. I want lots of social networking features, games, uploads and a hefty portal so users can interact heavily on the website. Phpbb has been out for quite a while now, and was a little disappointed at the number of mods released.

FYI, as you probably now Phpbb is open source and free.

So then I looked at VBulletin with has some social networking with the 3.7 release.

VBulletin

I upgraded one forum to VBulletin 3.7 and it’s been running for several months. I bought the blog feature and had a custom skin designed. Spent a lot of time installing custom mods. Installing mods in VBulletin is great – just click a button and *poof* it’s installed. Very different from the many hours needed to mod Phpbb.

So I have this kick ass VBulletin forum that used to be phpbb. It has loads of features and everyone says “Wow, this looks incredible”. Everyone’s so happy. But then I notice I go to that forum less and less, and it used to be one I went to almost every day. It’s so bogged down with crap that it gets in the way of reading content for me.

Forum activity has decreased. I didn’t get VBSeo – but after spending many years reading about that, it might be a good idea. The VBulletin social networking is “ok”, but not very fluid. It’s a “little” like facebook/myspace, but very elementary. So this one still has me confused. I know so many sites use VBulletin, but I don’t enjoy the reading experience so much. And by the time I did mods/skins/license I had paid about $800. Doesn’t bother me if I enjoy the end result.

Drupal

So now I look at Drupal for the social netoworking features I would like to have. Everyone seems to say Drupal is in for the long haul and is the big contender for web 3.0 – I install it and yes, like I’ve read, it’s a little bit of a nightmare on the back end. Verbage is not intuitive. But I don’t mind spending the time to learn it well if it will do what I want.

Problem: There is a phpbb to Drupal bridge, but only works for the older version of drupal and phpbb 2.x – I really don’t want to mess with waiting for Drupal 7.0 and having integration problems.

So now I even consider using the built in drupal forum and migrating my content from phpbb into drupal. Yes, that will work – but now I’ve totally ditched phpbb and am hoping (praying) that drupal improves their forum module on the next Drupal software update. And that also takes me away from the “big two” – Phpbb and VBulletin. A little scary when I know whatever change I make will probably be installed for many years.

Pros for Drupal: Have read it’s SEO is good out of the box, TONS of modules available, many third party integrations available.

But Drupal is a little ugly. So on to Joomla…

Joomla

Joomla looks great and have read about how wonderful the backend is. I installed Joomla and found that to be true. Admin section is intuitive and Joomla just has “that look” that makes you all warm and fuzzy.

Problem: Have read that Joomla is not picked up as well by Google as Drupal is. Also read that it runs a little slower. And for what I know it’s forum mod is not really a contender with even Drupals little forum mod.

The SEO is a killer for me. I used to do SEO full time and got burned during the big Google updates in 2004. I just don’t have the stomach to play any games anymore. I want the vanilla output. You can say that I don’t “get it” and that may be true. But if you lost as much money as I did (seven figures) during the early Google SEO games, I think you’d feel the same.

So somehow we always end up looking at WordPress, how does that happen?

WordPress

I LOVE wordpress. This article you’re reading is on wordpress. I have about 80 installations of it and the big feature for me? It’s very fun to do blog posts. Easy and smooth. My wordpress sites are very active because I enjoy them, and I don’t have to play any SEO games. I just focues on content. I like that and it feels good.

But wordpress is for blogging and quasi-CMS. It’s not for community building. So it is kind of axed out of the playing field when you’re talking about forums and online communities.

But I write about WordPress because it taught me a big lesson: If you have software that’s fun to use, you’ll probably use it.

So what I want is software to enhance web communities, but I want it to be as fun to work on as WordPress. (And phpbb is pretty fun too).

I want a web community with these features:

1. Forum that is easy to navigate and focuses on content.
2. Member blogs and photo albums that are a fun user experience, not tedious.
3. Member contribution articles that are featured on a front end portal.
4. Member uploads of media content like audio, video and documents.
5. Games (I love the ibproarcade for VBulletin)
6. Friends lists, user ability to create their own usergroups (available in VBulletin)
7. Review system for articles and member uploads.
8. Chatroom with automatic regulated hours when it opens and closes, and limited to a certain number of members.
9. Shop for processing download orders.
10. One login for all software/website components.

Today, I am going to show you how easy it is to create a professional-looking Flash website for free.

Creating an Account

First of all, you have to create an account, and it’s pretty straight forward. Just click on the big yellow Start Now button and enter your details. Once you have successfully created your account, it’s time to creating your first website.

Let’s begin creating your first website with this flash website builder. As you can see in the image, I have already created one, so I am going to create another one just for demonstration purposes. All you have to do is click “Add new site” which is under “My Account”.

The next step is to choose a template that will be the base design of your website. So far, Wix has 271 templates that you can choose from which are assorted into categories. A few of the categories you can choose from include:

* Portfolio

Just browse through the templates, and when you find one you like, move your mouse over it and click on “edit”. You can also view it to get more of a feel for what it looks like.

Customising Your Flash Website

Once you click on edit, a pop-up window will appear which is where you’ll edit your website. I picked the “My Personal Portfolio” template. It is now time to customise your template and add content and customise pages.

The editor within this flash website builder is quite powerful, easy to use and learn. The left hand side has all the features that you can add or change such as how the page looks (background colour and styles), the images and video’s that you see, the text, and widgets (such as displaying an RSS feed). The top bar has your basic editing options such as settings, preview, save button, undo/redo etc. The bottom displays the customisable options for the selected elements, and the right hand side navigates through each web page.

It will take me a while to explain everything that you can do, so I am just going to go through some of the basics.
Changing The Text

The first thing that you want to do is to change the text to what you want. To do this, simply click on the default text that is already on the screen and click edit.

Changing the Background Colour and Style

On the left hand side, select “Page Parts” and select “Background” to change the background, or select “Page Frame” to add a nice looking border around the page. You will the be presented with a box where you can choose a style. You really have to play around with all the styles and options to find one that you really like.
Adding Pages

It is important to note that a new page gives you a blank template, whereas a mini-page uses the parent frame design and adds a new link to the navigational structure. To add a new mini-page, click on “mini-page” in the navigational element and select add. This will create a new mini-page and automatically update the links. To create a new page, on the top right hand corner of the editor, click “Add Page”.

It is now up to you to design your site, and add your text, and make it look how you want.
Publishing Your Website

Now that you have created and finished designing your website (having saved it of course), it is time to publish your website. To publish your site, just hit the green “Publish” button on the top of the site.

Wix gives you three publishing options. The first option is to publish it on Wix. This will give your website the URL of http://www.wix.com/yourusername/wixSiteName. The second option is to send it via email, and the third option is to embed it in an existing document. With this option, you can easily embed your site into Facebook or Blogger, but if you want to use it on a webpage of yours, just grab the embed code and paste it in a HTML document somewhere.

Although you can update your Wix site and pay a monthly fee to remove ads and use your own domain name (as seen below), there is a simple hack that allows you to have your newly created Wix site on your own domain name.

All you have to do is create a new HTML document, and inside the body tags embed the code. Simply change the background colour to match your Wix site and upload the HTML document to your appropriate website directory. Visit your domain name, and your Wix site should load.

The Two Most Important Words in Blogging

Do you think writing blog is an easy job, It really sounds boring ,I was just browsing through internet and found a blog written by Brian Clark which proved me wrong.

Imagine… by the end of this post, you will be a more effective blogger, all because you learned two very important words, and the specific reasons why those words are so crucial.

Actually, both words can be found in the preceding sentence, along with hints related to their importance.

Did you catch them?

If not, keep reading, because all will be revealed.

The Most Important Word is “You”

Did you find the opening sentence compelling? If so, why?

Or the better question is, who was the first sentence focused on?

Well, let’s consider this. Have the words “me” or “I” appeared in this post before now?

It’s certainly ironic that a medium often used as a self-absorbed journaling platform would now need to be overwhelmingly focused on the reader in order to be effective. But if you’re blogging for marketing or public relations purposes, your every post should be purposefully aimed at the needs and wants of others.

You only benefit when readers benefit first.

When it comes to writing engaging content, “you” is the most powerful word in the English language, because people are ultimately interested in fulfilling their own needs. It may sound harsh, but the fact is your readers won’t start to actually care about you at all until you’ve repeatedly offered them exceptional value with your blog.

But once they do start to care about you, look out… because wonderful things can start happening. Things like viral buzz and customer evangelism.

The same substantive content will be more effective with the focus shifted toward the reader. One of the easiest ways to do that is to maximize the use of “you”, while minimizing or eliminating “I” and “me”.

Every time you finish writing a blog post, check the focus. How many times does you and its derivations appear? What about I and me?

Got the count? Good. Now, adjust accordingly.

Try it, and you’ll be amazed at the results.

The Other Word is “Because”

One of the most important characteristics of compelling, persuasive content is specificity. The more specific you are, the more credible your points, arguments or sales pitch.

There are many ways to be specific in your writing. One of the best is simply giving a reason why. And the most effective transition word when giving a “reason why” is because.

The power of because has actually been documented by social psychologist Ellen Langer, as told by our old friend Robert Cialdini from the Blog Trigger series. Langer performed an experiment where she asked to cut in line to use a copy machine.

She tested three different ways of asking, and recorded the results:

Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine?

60% said OK.

Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine because I’m in a rush?

94% said OK.

It appears that giving the “reason why” of because I’m in a rush boosted the effectiveness of the request immensely.

But here’s the kicker:

Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine because I have to make some copies?

93% said OK.

The trigger word “because” is so powerful that it didn’t really seem to matter that the “reason why” provided was something you might expect to hear from a four year old child.

Be specific in your assertions, and always give a reason why, especially when you want people to take some form of action.

Not because I said so, but rather because it will work wonders for you.

Why did we not bother supporting the IE6 browser?

The main reason is that it is a shocking browser and it was released ages ago, on August 27, 2001. Things have moved on but it seems that IE 6 has not. It is crazy that people still use it, and it can be said a large number of South Africans internet users still use it. The problem with IE 6 is the immense number of vulnerabilities that are still prevalent in the browser. Banking websites even block users from accessing their websites if they are using IE 6. Plus the sheer number of man-hours involved in trying to make your website work within IE 6 can be exhausting. Transparent PNG’s are not supported and display as a big grey blocks, AJAX and Javascript functions do not work properly, styling and placement of objects is sometimes a lottery, heaven knows why it displays some items as it does.

We looked at what the international trend is with regards to IE 6 support and cross browser compatibility. Many web design companies charge to have IE 6 cross browser support, in most cases you need to create an entire new CSS for IE 6. YouTube and Google are weaning out support for the browser which shows a strong trend that if companies that garner that many visitors each day are starting to send out the message, is it worth the extra effort to support a soon to be dead browser ?

Everyone out there is obviously interested in statistics to see how many web site hits and web site visitors the site is getting. So, I thought it would be a good idea to point out a few basics, 10 to be exact, that every website should implement for better search engine ranking. I expect that some of you already know these basics. If so, great! You are already on a great start. If not, then I urge you to put these into place. Keep in mind that this list will not be enough to get you on Google’s first page, but this is a great start. The goal for this list is primarily to open your eyes to the world of SEO or “Search Engine Optimization“.

Get links to your site! Submit your website to online directories such as DMOZ and Yahoo, which are free. Join a local Chamber of Commerce which typically offers an online directory for local businesses and organizations. Search engines see links as votes for your website. The more votes you get the better. BUT! Be sure these are not links from spam type websites or Google and other search engines will penalize and possibly ban your website. P.S. If you provided a testimonial to ONFX. Then I have published your testimonial and provided a link to your site.
Use keywords for links within your website and pointing to your website. For example, if you provide “blue gadgets”, then your text should read “blue gadgets” not “click here”.
Use natural language in your web pages that are related to your target keywords and phrases rather than keyword stuffing. A very high use of keywords will be flagged by search engines as spamming.
Use a unique Title tag on each web page. If you absolutely must have your web site name, then place it at the end.
Fresh content can help improve your ranking. So, if possible, update your pages on a regular basis. Search engines see new content as relevancy.
If your website does not change often, then a blog might help your website SEO, but keep in mind that you need to blog fairly often to get the benefits.
Eliminate similar and duplicate content. This is a bit more complicated than it sounds. You must eliminate “canonicalization”. This means that you must use your domain name with or without the “www”. For example, use only http://www.yourdomain.com or http://yourdomain.com. Do not use both or search engines consider this spam and penalize your website. P.S. If you need instructions, I will provide them shortly.
Make sure you use meta tags on your web pages. Now, before you comment that they are no longer used by most search engines for SEO purposes, I will say that I agree with you. So, why do you need them? Because they are still used in many cases to display a description of your website in search engine results. So, if you offer some type interest in your headline or description, than the visitor will click and visit your website!
Make sure your website is easy to navigate and well structured. Search engines crawl your website just like visitors navigate it. So, the easier it is for humans, then the easier it likely will be for search engines.
Do NOT design your website without SEO consideration. Once that cool looking Flash-based website is built, you will realize that it will be difficult if not impossible to be indexed by search engines.

Automattic founder Matt Mullenweg announced the new feature for WordPress.com earlier today. It’s rather simple: enable “Post by Voice” in your dashboard and you will receive a phone number and a unique code for posting audio from your phone to your blog. You can post up to one hour of audio at a time.

The new feature is powered by Twilio, a cloud-based platform for building communication and voice applications.

The feature isn’t anything revolutionary — Livejournal has supported similar functionality for years. However, it should make for thousands of interesting, late-night posts in the near future. Currently the feature is only available for WordPress.com blogs, but we’d love to see it implemented in the open-source version of WordPress as well.
